When in doubt we will answer! Here are some common questions we are asked
There is no single answer for how counselling works. Counselling is a unique process that is tailor-made to your needs and goals. The one size fits all rule does not apply here. In your journey with your psychologist, you will uncover thoughts, emotions, and behaviours that are fundamental to you. Some of this may be helpful and some unhelpful, which you may desire to shed.
At The Thought Co. your psychologist’s goal in therapy is not to tell you right from wrong, make decisions for you, or be your fortune teller. As a psychologist, our goal is to go on a therapeutic journey with you as you uncover yourself and find ways to achieve your goals. We believe that this will create a shift in your behaviour, emotions, and thoughts. This will result in a shift in your life and environment.
“No, therapy is for everyone. While one may seek therapy to learn better coping skills, they can also approach therapy as a means for self improvement and wellbeing”
If different situations in your life cause significant distress, overwhelm you with emotions or make you feel incapable of dealing with them alone, it might be a good idea to seek help. Also, if you feel like you need it, without any “reason”, that is also valid. Many different thought processes and life challenges affect us in our daily life and therapy will give you more space and time to explore and find new healthy ways of dealing with them.
Don’t be afraid to go therapy shopping!
It is important to find the right therapist-match for you. We understand that looking for a right therapist can be difficult sometimes. List down all the qualities you want in your therapist before you start looking for one. Make sure you talk to them before your first session so you get an understanding of the therapist and their personality. Click here to watch the video where we talk about how to go therapy-shopping!
Of course! We believe that it is very important that you know and understand your psychologist before starting therapy with them. A preliminary call will give you an introduction and a feel of how your future communications will go about. It will allow you to judge whether or not you gel with them and want them to give you guidance and help you. Contact us or email us at hello@thethoughtco.in for further communication and we will get you in touch with the psychologist you’re interested in for a free 15 minute call.
The first session in counseling is like meeting any new health professional for the first time. This session is almost always dedicated to getting to know each other, developing our therapeutic relationship and learning about therapy. At TTC we like to send a basic intake form prior to the first session to know more about you. You can see our IGTV video on what we should expect in the first therapy session!
You first decide whether you want to continue to speak with the concerned therapist. If yes, you decide about the frequency of your sessions and the therapeutic journey begins. Payments are charged in a monthly invoice after the initial session.
There is no fixed number of sessions you need to get better. The termination of counseling happens when you decide that your goals have been reached or your concerns have been mitigated.
We suggest that you should first discuss this with your counselor and try to have an open conversation with them. Remember the journey of therapy is your own and you decide whom you chose to travel along with. If you still feel that you want to change your counselor then please email us at hello@thethoughtco.in
